Coal

Coal is a combustible rock mainly composed of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, mostly hydrogen, sulphur, oxygen and nitrogen. Coal occurs as layers, called coal beds or coal seams, that are found between other sedimentary rocks. Coal is slightly denser than water but less dense than most of the rocks of the Earths crust.

Coal Power Impacts

Nov 15, 2017Coal impacts: global warming. Climate change is coal's most serious, long-term, global impact. Chemically, coal is mostly carbon, which, when burned, reacts with oxygen in the air to produce carbon dioxide, a heat-trapping gas. The Earth's Carbon Reservoirs

Making coal and other organic matter has also led to splitting the carbon from the oxygen, with much of the oxygen staying in the air. This has produced an atmosphere fundamentally different from those of Venus and Mars — one that is chemically out of balance and therefore unsustainable were it not for Earth's ongoing life processes.

Coal Bed Methane

Methane is loosely bound to coal -- held in place by the water in the coal deposits. The water contributes pressure that keeps methane gas attached to the coal. In CBM development, water is removed from the coal bed (by pumping), which decreases the pressure on the gas and allows it to detach from the coal and flow up the well. Figure I-24.
